Last week I was invited to dinner downtown by a girl friend for a potential business collaboration. I had the chance to dress up a little, eat sushi, be kid-free, and meet and talk with other like-minded women. Sounds dreamy, right? Well, not if you are an introvert like me. For a week I was seriously dreading the whole affair. Nothing hits my nerves like meeting new people, on my own, in a setting that I rarely enter. I love to get out with girl friends, but I have a small group of women that I'm comfortable going out with, and we never venture so far as a hot restaurant downtown. In fact, I had the chance that night to just go get frozen yogurt with a few blogging friends in town, but when I asked my husband which invite I should take, he told me there was no question. I definitely needed to go to the meeting that scared me to death.

The whole day I was just overwhelmed with anxiety about it all. Of course I stressed about what to wear, too. I really wanted to wear something white, like this blouse, because I can never keep white clean when I'm around my kids. After changing several times, I finally ended up in white denim and a chambray top, which worked, but I was 20 minutes late to dinner (not a stress reliever - let me tell you!). I even forgot business cards, but I did remember to pack a few earrings to share so that I could talk about our business.

I'd love to say that once I got there-,everything was fine - and it kind of was. But emotionally, it was a really draining evening. I showed up and was able to meet the other three women I didn't know, and of course, they were the nicest. They were so genuine and interested in what I had to share that they even bought earrings from me on the spot. I felt so lame for being so worried about it all! But despite feeling like diving into a hole, I was an open book. I ended up expressing how stressed I was to come and meet up and collaborate. I felt about 10 years old, but I was authentic about how hard it was for me to show up and they liked me all the more for it. I am reading Brene Brown's book called Daring Greatly, and it is all about being courageous and authentic. I can look back on the evening and say I was both of those things, but holy cow was it uncomfortable. I drove home feeling so many emotions - from overwhelmed and exposed to excited and proud of myself. Overall I know there is growth that will come out of pushing myself past my limits, and I plan to keep pushing them. But that doesn't mean I'll enjoy it in the moment!

Do you stress about meeting new people? How would you handle something like this?

Well, enough heavy stuff - onto the outfit! This beautiul boho blouse is from a new-to-me online company called Chicwish. I was immediately drawn to their indie and bohemian style. This fringe bag has been my purse of choice lately, and I've received compliments every time I've used it. Today on the blog, they are giving away a $100 gift card to shop their site! PLUS all new customers get 30% off their first order just by registering and liking them on FB (see giveaway entries below). Boho is super hot this summer, so I'm sure you'll find something you love at Chicwish.

Every other Friday is Everyday Style - where I post the details of my everyday outfits from Instagram. This summer I have been all about wearing graphic tees. I'll admit I have a bias towards and have been wearing my Nickel & Suede graphic tee almost daily. It is definitely a new favorite! Graphic tees are a great way to dress casually and look like you still put an outfit together. Try pairing them with printed skinnies, colored skinnies, and interesting details like zippers. Also add big earrings and other accessories to dress up a tee in a purposeful way.

Another style I've been loving is a dressy tee, like the lace one in the last photo. I wore it with a full navy skirt to a wedding, and I've also dressed it down like I styled earlier this week.

What is your summer style go-to? Graphic tees? Maxi skirts?

Have a great weekend!

Summer Beauty Products

-

It's been a few months since I talked beauty products, but I've tried some new ones lately that are definitely worth the discussion! I don't know about you but between the swimming and the sweating, I haven't been feeling myself in the beauty department lately. We have less places to be so getting dressed and made up takes more motivation, even for me- someone who puts on makeup and earrings for a 5k! But, this list of products are some that have helped me feel a little cuter and more easily put together this Summer.

1. TanWISE Dark Bronzing Sunless Mousse- A few months back I did a sunless tanner post and talked about my favorite sunless tanner. I started to hear a lot about TanWISE so I decided to give it a try when my previous lotion ran out. So here is what I think- I love it. I really, really think its amazing stuff. But I haven't given up my Banana Boat lotion either.

TanWISE is a mousse so it rubs on differently than a lotion, which also means it drys almost instantly. It is literally brown/black- not orange at all so right away you look more authentically tan. It smells pretty good- between a cherry and a coconut smell. You still have to wait 10 minutes to get dressed and it develops over the next few hours. It really stains your hands so you must use gloves or a mitt or wash them multiple times while you apply. One big benefit is that I do think it works for all skin types because it is not orange at all. Fair skinned ladies will just look darker, not more orange. Overall I think its a winner. It costs about $13 for a bottle, but you use less mousse than you would a lotion and I haven't run out yet. There is a specific face gel that I'll talk about below.

I still like my Banana Boat lotion because I like the moisturizing lotion and for some reason I think the tan from it sticks around longer. That may not be true, but I've been alternating which tanner I use.

2. TanWISE Face Gel- This is the self tanning gel specifically for faces. I like it but I don't LOVE it. I like that it dries and doesn't leave my face oily. It smells like cherry and goes on the same tone as the TanWISE mousse- black/brown. I don't feel like it gets as dark as the mousse or my Banana Boat lotion. I don't notice and immediate change in my face color which I don't like. It's definitely more subtle. The cost is about $5.

3. Revlon Lip Butter Juicy Papaya- I have mentioned my love for Revlon Lip Butter's before- they really are the best lipstick/chapstick out there. They provide plenty of color and moisture for a great price ($6). I love this shade for everyday wear this Summer. It is a great shade of coral and you won't look or feel like you have thick lipstick on.

4. Essie Blanc- I'm loving the white nail polish trend this Summer. It makes you look tan and your nails look fresh. One thing to note with white polish though is not to apply sunless tanner while your nails are white. Apply tanner before and paint your nails afterwards!

5. Teeze w/ Eez-  With Summer humidity in Missouri my hair can use all of the volume it can get. Of course I don't go for (and couldn't get) the crazy huge hair look, but I do add volume to my roots with a little back combing every morning. Teeze w/ Eez sent me this comb to try out a few weeks ago and I feel like it is worth sharing with you. It claims that one stroke is the equivalent to multiple strokes with a normal comb. And I can say that is true. The way the teeth are layered it works quickly and efficiently. I think it would work even better for long hair than my short hair, but I still like it and will probably keep using it. (I don't think you can buy it on their site, but eBay had several.)

What are your Summer beauty favs right now? Anything life changing? What should I try next?

How To Make Modest Cut Off Shorts - Tutorial

How to Make Cut Off Shorts- Easy tutorial for Summer!

Camel cardigan, graphic tee, cut off shorts and leopard sneakers

So, I'm back with a tutorial for you this week, and in true OLM form, it's SO easy. I feel awkward even calling this a tutorial, but it is what it is! A few weeks back, I posted an outfit on Instagram with cut off jean shorts and several people asked how I made mine. So here it is.

Materials:

  • Shorts that you love
  • Pants that you don't

Okay, so I'm a Mormon, and most of us wear shorts to the knee. I always have and always will. But depending on the year, knee-length shorts can be hard to find. There are a lot of cute ones at Old Navy right now, but it is so much cheaper to cut off thrifted denim than to buy 4 or 5 pairs of shorts. The shorts that I used as a pattern are from Old Navy, and I chose them because I know that they are long enough for me. The pants I used are from Saver's and were bootcut, but fit slim all the way down to the knee.

How to Make Cut Off Shorts- Easy tutorial for Summer!

To turn these pants into shorts, I lined the shorts up over the pants and used their hem as a guide. Then I cut the pant leg straight across about an inch longer than my shorts. This left me plenty of room to play with after I tried on the newly cropped pants. I tried on the pants and played with cuffing the hem using the extra length. For these pants, I opted to just cut a raw edge a the right length with no cuff.

How to Make Cut Off Shorts- Easy tutorial for Summer!

The name of the game with making cut offs is trimming a little and trying them on again. I ended up cutting mine three different times. You can always cut more, and depending on the fit of the jeans, you may decide to trim more or less for each different pair. For the final trim, you can also cut the leg at a slight angle, making them longer in the back because your bum will shorten the back a little more than the front.

How to Make Cut Off Shorts- Easy tutorial for Summer!

After the final cut, I threw my new shorts in the washer and the dryer to rough up the hem. You can also use your fingernail or a razor blade by pulling along the raw edge. Trim the excess strings, but not all of them - the point is to have a messy look.

Variations on this tutorial:
  • Run a straight stitch around the edge of your hem using denim colored thread to prevent crazy fraying.
  • Cut the shorts long and cuff them. You can also stitch the cuff in place.
  • Use looser fitting pants and roll/cuff them hem to create boyfriend shorts.
  • Distress the rest of the shorts using this tutorial.
  • Try cutting off chinos or colored denim.

I know I'll be cutting off plenty of more pairs of pants this summer, so be sure to make a pair for yourself! They are the warm weather version of distressed jeans and are perfect for casual chic summer style.

What are your cut off tips?

What are you up to this week?

I've got a fun giveaway for you today from Esli's Boutique. I love to share and work with boutiques that carry different items than your typical online boutique and Esli's definitely fits the bill. They contacted me a few weeks back, right when I was looking for a top to wear to my brother-in-law's wedding. They sent me this cream lace tee and it worked perfectly! Of course, in the craziness of the wedding, I didn't get any outfit photos, but this tee works great to dress up or down and if you know me, you know I prefer to dress things down. :) This tee is a great neutral with plenty of texture, so it can be styled in a lot of ways.

Esli's is giving away a $50 gift card to their online boutique and offering 15% off to ONE little MOMMA readers through June 30th using code ONELITTLEMOMMA. You can find them on FB and IG. US entries only. Contest ends 6/30/14.

Summer Swim Style

Summer swim style with ONE little MOMMA

Our family spent the weekend taking a whirlwind trip to Tucson, AZ for a family wedding and a mini-vacation. We are all recovering from the fun and the stress of it all, but we had a great trip. I'll probably share more about it later this week, but today I'm talking swimming suits and pool style. We spent time at the pool over the weekend and are looking forward to swimming more now that Summer has finally decided to stick around. I have worn one piece for most of my life and especially as a mom, I am all about coverage at the pool. This year I decided to try out a rash guard and bikini bottom combo. I did not take "outfit photos" in my suit, but I did want to share the details about my swim favs and why I love them.  Here are my picks for this year's poolside style.

Summer swim style with ONE little MOMMA
When I bought my rash guard from Old Navy, I didn't even think about what I was going to wear under it. I forgot they have NO support on their own. Being a one piece die hard, I didn't even own a bikini top to pair with it so I went shopping. I picked up the Balconette Bikini top from Old Navy to wear under it and I have been so happy with it. I've never worn a swimsuit with so much support up top. The rash guard has also worked out great. It is so comfortable and I feel totally covered whenever I bend down and lean over to help the kids. The sleeves keep me cool by keeping my arms wet and they also offer sun protection. I'm a big fan of the whole combination.

My other favorites pieces at the pool this year are my RE aviators, Sam and Libby sandals from Target, and this bag from Consuela. I can't say enough good things about this bag. It is on the pricey side for a pool bag, but I took it as my purse on vacation this weekend and it was a dream come true. The bag is enormous and it held anything and everything I tried to shove in it. The entire body of the bag is covered in vinyl - inside and out and the handles are real leather. It is entirely wipeable and basically waterproof which makes it the PERFECT summer bag for moms. I can definitely say that it has exceeded my expectations and it is worth the cost. I'll be toting this one around all Summer!

Have you tried the rash guard out for the pool? What suit are you wearing this year? I'd love if you shared by linking up your suit in the comments!

Sunday Style - Faux Black Dress

-

Kimono, black dress and turquoise accessories

Kimono, black dress and turquoise accessories

Black blouse, black skirt, turquoise and camel

Black blouse, black skirt, turquoise and camel

Black blouse, black skirt, turquoise and camel

As you know, I love to wear my wardrobe basics and neutral colors. I'm always looking for new and interesting ways to wear them together. I recently saw the idea of a faux romper somewhere, done by pairing a black top with black track pants and a belt. I decided to try a faux black dress by pairing a black blouse tucked into my black skirt. Tucking in the top created a fun blouson shape, and I loved the end result. I threw on the tan kimono as an afterthought - mostly to stay warm at church - and mixed in some turquoise and camel accessories. It's an edgier look but a great way to mix up the basics.

I've been thinking this week that I kind of approach life this way. When it comes to what is important to me and what I believe, I'm always trying to go back to the basics and look at them in different ways to learn more. I teach a class at church on Sundays, and I love to discuss the basics with them in hopes of learning more. It's easy to think, "Oh, I know what it looks and feels like to put God first in my life," or "I know what it means to love other people," or "I know what I have to do to be a good person," but sometimes we don't. There are always things we can learn about ourselves and ways we can change for the better, even in the most basic parts of our actions and our faith. And I've found that the more we accept where we are, the easier it is to see where we can make those changes.

Where do you find inspiration to become better?

Have a great Sunday!
